IELTS stands for “International English Language Testing System.” It is a standardized test used to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers, especially those who want to study, work, or immigrate to English-speaking countries. How long is the Listening paper?

The Listening paper is the same in both the Academic and the General Training modules of the IELTS test. It lasts approximately 30 minutes and you are given an extra 10 minutes to write your answers onto a separate answer sheet. 

What type of information will I hear?

The Listening paper has four separate sections. Each section is a little more difficult than the one before. They feature speakers from a variety of English-speaking countries. Each section has a different focus. 

  • In Section 1, you will hear a conversation between two people (e.g. finding out information about travel). 
  • In Section 2, you will hear a monologue on a general topic (e.g. a radio broadcast). 
  • In Section 3, you will hear a conversation between two or three people in an academic context (e.g. discussing an assignment). 
  • In Section 4, you will hear a monologue in an academic context (e.g. a lecture). 

Will I hear the recording more than once?

It is important to remember that you will hear the recording only once. To help you prepare, you will be given some extra time at the start of each section. During this time, you should read the questions carefully. 

How is the Listening paper assessed?

You will be asked a total of 40 questions. In order to assess how much of the recording you understand, the questions will usually paraphrase (use different words with a similar meaning) the words that are in the text.

What types of question will I need to answer?

There are 10 questions in each section, and there is a variety of question types. For some types, you need to write words or numbers that you hear. 

  • forms/notes/table/flow-chart/summary completion 
  • short-answer questions 
  • sentence completion 

For other tasks, you need to choose an option from a list and write a letter on your answer sheet. 

  • labelling a diagram/plan/map

How do I answer the questions?

The instructions and the questions will tell you what type of information you need to listen for, and the type of answer you need to give. Listen carefully to any instructions you hear on the recording. Follow the instructions on the question paper carefully. In this unit, you will be able to practise all of these question types. 

How can I improve my Listening paper score?

You can improve your score by following the instructions carefully, and remembering the Test Tips in this unit. This unit will also tell you the skills you need in order to achieve your highest score. Before the test, try to listen to accents from a variety of English-speaking countries. Studying all aspects of English (including vocabulary and grammar) will also help improve your IELTS score. If you make any mistakes in the practice exercises, make sure that you listen to the recording again and check your answers carefully in the Answer Key.

How is the IELTS Academic test marked?

IELTS on Computer / IELTS Computer Based Test

The IELTS Reading, Writing and Listening tests are on a computer, but the Speaking test is face-to-face discussion. You can choose to take IELTS on a computer for both the General Training and Academic tests. The time will be allocated to each test part for both IELTS on computer test. You will do the Reading, Listening, and Writing parts of the test using a computer. All answers will be typed on the computer screen at the test center. You will also be able to write notes on a notes sheet during the IELTS Listening test.

The IELTS Speaking Test remains the same, with a face-to-face interview with an examiner. The Speaking test will be completed either just before, or just after the Reading, Listening, and Writing test parts. 
Remember, Taking IELTS on a Computer has many benefits. For example, your results arrive a lot faster. With IELTS on Computer your results will be available within 3 to 5 working days.

What should I bring on my test day?

You must bring the same passport or national identity card that you used to book your IELTS test. If you do a IELTS on computer test, the centre will provide you with pencils and paper. You must leave all your personal belongings outside the examination room in a secure area or locker. Mobile phones, pagers and smartwatches must be switched off and left with your personal belongings. If you keep mobile phones or electronic devices with you, you will be disqualified.

Can I use my own headphones for the IELTS Listening test?

No, Headphones will always be provided for IELTS on computer IELTS. If you have hearing difficulties, you should ask your center to use special amplification equipment to help you hear the recording, but you will need to ask at least two weeks before your test date.

Can the IELTS test center send my result to a university overseas?

When booking  your IELTS test, you  are  given the option to have your IELTS test results sent up to 5 nominated institutions / universities. If  you have  already taken the IELTS test  and would like to send your results to a recognized organization, contact the  test center  where you sat your exam. They will be able to help. Note that  there may be additional fees  for this.

Can I postpone or cancel my IELTS test?

Yes, Contact the test center where you booked your test if you need to postpone or cancel. If you cancel or postpone your test more than 5 weeks before the IELTS test date, you can receive a refund minus an administration fee. If you cancel or postpone your test within 5 weeks of your test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a serious medical reason for needing to cancel or postpone it. If you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of your test date, you will receive a refund minus the local administrative cost.

Can I do all parts of the IELTS test on Computer?

If you take an IELTS Test on Computer, the Reading, Writing and Listening parts of the IELTS test are completed on a computer, but the Speaking test is completed face-to-face with an IELTS examiner.

Can I do all parts of the test on the same day?

The IELTS Listening, Reading, and Writing parts of the test are completed immediately after each other on the same day. In some test centers, you will sit the Speaking test on the same day, or up to 7 days before or after your test date. If you take IELTS test on computer, the IELTS Speaking test will be taken on the same day, either before, or after the other three parts of the test.

Special requirements / IELTS

If you have low vision or other special requirements, find out how your test venue can help to support you on test day. It is best to contact your local test center as early as possible informing them about your special needs. Giving adequate notice is necessary for the modified test versions to be prepared or special administrative arrangements to be made.

Can I write my answers in capital letters?

Yes, you can use all capital letters in the IELTS Reading and Listening sections. If you use capital letters in the IELTS Writing section, make sure that your punctuation is correct and the examiner can see where you start and finish your sentences.
